Fewell Could Be Headed Back

The Carolina Panthers called an afternoon press conference to introduce San Diego defensive coordinator Ron Rivera as their new head coach. That leaves Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell with only Denver and Cleveland as possibilities.

Perry Fewell may have to be content to spend at least another year as the Giants defensive coordinator.

That's not a bad thing from the Giants end, since he did turn around a sorry defense into a generally aggressive, turnover-creating unit. Fewell might think a bit differently after interviewing for three head coaching jobs.

He's down to two possibilities now. The Panthers, his first interview, have decided to go with San Diego defensive coordinator Ron Rivera to replace the fired John Fox. That leaves only Denver and Cleveland as possibilites for Fewell, and Denver is said to be very interested in Fox. They're interested enough that they moved Fox's interview to later in the week because of the snows that blanketed Charlotte on Monday.

Fewell was scheduled for an interview with Cleveland Tuesday. That may be his best bet at this point, though there is some speculation that, while regarded as more than a Rooney Rule candidate, he is not a lock for the job by any means.
