Many Happy Returns For Jernigan?

Posted Apr 29, 2011

Domenik Hixon is expected to be back healthy from knee reconstruction to add the punch the return game lacked last year. But if he's at less than full strength, perhaps the Giants' third-rounder, Troy WR Jerrell Jernigan, can step up.

The Giants spent all of 2010 searching for a decent returner to replace the injured Domenik Hixon, without much success.

But perhaps they found one in the third round Friday in Troy WR Jerrell Jernigan.

The 5-9, 185-pound Jernigan has flat-out speed and is known as a big playmaker who is expected to make an initial impact as a returner on the next level. Best of all, he has the ability to make people miss, something that should help the kickoff and punt return games rise from the 31st rankings of last season.

Take a gander.

Jernigan might come in handy in the passing game, too, especially if the injury bug that took out Steve Smith, Hakeem Nicks, Hixon, and Ramses Barden for all or significant parts of the 2010 season bites again. Though not big enough to be a No. 1, he has the speed and elusiveness to be a No. 2. And he's fearless going over the middle.

Jernigan averaged 13.3 yards per punt return and scored a touchdown, and he averaged 25.2 yards per kickoff return with a 100-yard touchdown. And director of scouting Marc Ross described him as a do-everything guy who also ran the Wildcat at Troy and can play the slot.
