Giants Reach For O-Lineman In Fourth

The Giants addressed their need on the offensive line by taking Indiana's 323-pound James Brewer in the fourth round (117 overall). But did they reach for him?

The NFL draft biography projected Indiana's James Brewer as an undrafted free agent. But apparently the person writing the bio wasn't looking at the Giants' value board.

General manager Jerry Reese made the 6-foot-6, 323-pound Brewer his fourth-round pick Saturday, despite criticism that Brewer didn't move real well in his role at right tackle. The Giants probably feel they can mold him into an eventual successor to Kareem McKenzie a couple of years down the road, as he had just 21 career starts after moving to the gridiron from basketball, his first love, as a high school senior. He also missed three games last year due to injury.

He's clearly a developmental project who needs to learn how to handle speed and not get pushed off the ball against defensive ends with comparable size.

"Technique things, this guy is going to get so much better with the pro techniques and with this being his fulltime job," Reese said. "We see him coming in and developing. Not a lot of pressure to come in and play right away, but we always expect our guys to come in and be ready to play in case there are some injuries.

"He’s a smart kid, we think he can come in and do that. We would like for him to get a little stronger and learn better technique. We think his improvement is the upside for this guy."
