Giants DE Osi Umenyiora is still sitting out practices as he tries to get a new contract. But the Star-Ledger reports that president and CEO John Mara believes there's a deal to be made.

Whatever the case, be it the supposed knee injury that kept him in the trainer's room Sunday, or his want of a new contract that will pay him upwards of $10 million per year, Osi Umenyiora has yet to practice with his teammates.

But Giants president and CEO John Mara told the Star-Ledger that he believes something can be done to make his errant pass-rushing defensive end happy.

"Yes. I think it will be resolved and he’ll be a Giant this year," Mara said. "It’s something we can work out. We’re already talking to his agent to do something incentive wise with his contract to make him happy."

The operative word there is incentives, and so far nothing the Giants have reportedly offered has done the job. ESPN reported that they have offered Umenyiora $2 million in incentives for 15 sacks, a number he has yet to attain in eight previous seasons.

The newspaper said Umenyiora's agent has asked that the last year of his two remaining contract seasons be cut off so he can become a free agent after this year. His current contract will pay him $7.1 million over the final two years. But the Giants haven't budged on that.

Nor are they amenable to trading him.

So the situation remains at a standstill, for now.

But Mara is hopeful something can be worked out -- soon.

"We want him on this team," Mara said. "He belongs here. He’s had a great career here. He adds a lot to this team. I always say, the reason we were able to win Super Bowl XLII was that they couldn’t block our front. That was the first time all year Tom Brady faced that kind of pressure. That, to me, is the heart of our team. We’re hoping we can work it out soon."
