Veteran MLB Jonathan Goff bumped knees with a teammate in Monday's practice and wound up with a season-ending injury. If things keep going along these lines, the Giants season may be ending before the opening kickoff Sunday in Washington.

Another day, another season-ending injury for the Giants.

This time, it's veteran middle linebacker Jonathan Goff, who in Monday's light practice, bumped knees with a teammate and tore his ACL. An MRI Tuesday confirmed the findings, and Goff will take a seat for the season.

Goff, a solid if unspectacular player, was a decent run-stopper and certainly would have helped a linebacker corps that is long in inexperience and short on veterans. In fact, the only other middle linebacker on the roster now is sixth-round rookie Greg Jones, who will play between defensive line convert Mathias Kiwanuka and Michael Boley if the Giants don't sign anyone else.

But don't expect that to happen. With people like ex-Giants Keith Bulluck and Kawika Mitchell out of work, they can at least get some experience. It will be old experience, but probably better than entrusting first and second down to a rookie before pulling in Deon Grant for the three-safety alignment on passing downs.

For Goff, it's especially painful. He was heading into his free agent year. Now, he'll probably have to re-sign cheap.

And for the Giants, it's another blow to a defense already depleted by the season-long loss of valued starting CB Terrell Thomas, backup CB Brian Witherspoon, and the gradual recoveries of DE Osi Umenyiora and first-round CB Prince Amukamara. The Giants, devoid of quality, proven backup talent in many places, could ill-afford injuries even before the Goff mishap.

The Giants also lost backup LB Clint Sintim (ACL) and rookie DT Marvin Austin (left pec) to season-ending injuries.

Now, they have taken another serious blow.

One writer recently opined that if Tom Coughlin brings this team to the playoffs despite the roster situation, he should be named Coach of the Year, hands down.

Not a far-fetched thought.
