Report: Cruz won't be at minicamp Tuesday

With Big Blue set to open minicamp, one of the team's top playmakers isn't likely to report to the Timex Performance Center this week.

The contract standoff between the New York Giants and star wide receiver Victor Cruz will reportedly extend through the team's first day of minicamp on Tuesday. While reports surfaced earlier this week that the two sides were closing in on the parameters of a long-term deal, on Monday NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, citing a source with knowledge of the situation, characterizes the talks as having "moved incredibly slowly."

Giants fans were optimistic that Cruz and his partner in crime Hakeem Nicks would both be present at the first day of minicamp, but it's a distinct possibility that Eli Manning could be without his top two receiving targets this week. While Cruz is technically not under contract unless he signs his restricted free agent tender or agrees to an extension, Nicks has one year remaining on his deal and is eligible to be fined for staging a contract holdout. Nicks could be penalized $11,025 for each day of minicamp he misses, adding up to a total of $66,150 if he misses the entire camp session.

To make matters worse for Big Blue, Nicks is coming off knee surgery which could limit his participation in practice or sideline him entirely even if he does show up. Not exactly a scintillating start for a Giants team looking to reclaim postseason glory after finishing out of playoff contention in 2012.
