The New York Giants postseason hopes came to a grinding halt after they were romped 37-14 by the San Diego Chargers.

The New York Giants Super Bowl Countdown clock struck midnight after Sunday’s 37-14 loss to the San Diego Chargers officially eliminated Big Blue from playoff contention. The Giants continued their losing ways committing three more costly turnovers and allowing San Diego to convert 10-of-15 third downs in the Week 14 contest. Quarterback Eli Manning now has a 15-to-18 touchdown to interception ratio this season as New York has looked like a far cry from a postseason contender. Big Blue’s No. 11 ranked defense surrendered 388 total yards and four touchdowns as the Chargers raced out to a 24-0 halftime advantage and coasted to an easy victory.

Giants’ general manager Jerry Reese declared during training camp this summer that his team had one goal in mind and that was to play in the Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium. Those hopes were crushed after the Giants were embarrassed by the Chargers and their lackluster play in all three phases saw the team go quietly into the San Diego night.

While the cross-town Jets and head man Rex Ryan have been labeled as the braggarts in the Big Apple, it’s Reese's mouth and preseason proclamation that has the general manager eating his own words. After opening the season 0-6, the Giants rebounded to win four straight games against predominantly backup and below average quarterbacks. With the fan base starting to dream big, New York suffered a narrow loss two weeks ago to the Dallas Cowboys, which effectively put an end to its division title hopes and made an unlikely journey to the postseason nearly impossible.

The Giants sealed their fate on Sunday, taking the drama and intrigue out of their remaining three games of the season. With the NFL playoffs just a few weeks away, the only New York team still in contention is wearing Green and White.
