Senior Vice President and General Manager of the New York Giants Jerry Reese, spoke about the issues with this past season and the front office’s plan moving forward.

The Giants had a roller-coaster of the season, starting 0-6, a record no one thought they could recover from. “Well, you know, 7-9 sucks,” said Reese after Sunday’s win over the Washington Redskins.

“I really don’t have a lot of answers why we started 0-6, I really don’t. I wish I had some answers to explain that but I would have bet that we would not start out 0-6. But we did.”

Even so, the team recovered and had a five game win streak before ultimately ending the season 7-9.

“We’ll start the evaluation process pretty quickly here and we’ll get going with our offseason issues,” said Reese.

With another year of the Giants not going to the playoffs, many expect the evaluation process to being with head coach, Tom Coughlin. Reese made it clear that no decisions about the coaching staff would be made until they talked to New York’s head man.

“Later this week we’ll sit down with Tom, but do I want him to come back? Absolutely, I want him to come back,” stated Reese. “But I have to sit down, it’s not fair to him, I think he needs to just reflect.”

The evaluation not only falls to the coaching staff, but everyone. The Giants have an immense amount of free agents, as well as the injuries of players such as Jason Pierre-Paul, David Wilson, and of course, Eli Manning. Throughout the season the question of Manning’s position at quarterback constantly fell to Coughlin, who always noted Manning was the guy. With an injury and the most turnovers in the league, some wonder his future with the franchise.

“We have a lot of confidence in Eli but he has to play better,” admitted Reese. “We expect him to play better, he expects himself to play better.”

“He’s got to sit down with myself, John and Steve and we’ll figure out what his status will be and then we’ll start talking about those things.”

The Giant’s GM also made it clear that reconstruction of the team was definitely going to happen and that change happens in every offense; no matter the team’s record. “Our standards are high around here and we won’t back off that.”

Overall, Reese notes that the franchise does not try to be “hasty” about any of its upcoming decisions and that ultimately, “We win together and we lose together. We went 7-9 together.”
