Nothing gets American football fans more excited than the start of another NFL season. For that, we'll have to wait until September. Almost as exciting as the beginning of the regular season is the start of the preseason, and that's something that Giants fans won't have to wait all that long for.
That's because New York has been selected to play in the 2014 Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio. The annual contest occurs one day after the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony and serves to kick off the NFL preseason.
This year's game takes place on Saturday, August 3 and will be televised by NBC. The Buffalo Bills of the AFC will be the Giants' opponent.
New York last played in the Hall of Fame Game in 2002, when they defeated the Houston Texans in the franchise's inaugural season 34-17.
The Giants also participated in the first ever Hall of Fame Game in 1962, when they played to a 21-21 draw versus the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Bills are an appropriate opponent for the Giants, as both sides will be represented by players being inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. Defensive end Michael Strahan played with the Giants from 1993 to 2007 and holds the NFL record for most sacks in a single season with 22.5
Buffalo is the team associated with wide receiver Andre Reed, who is also being inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. Reed played with the Bills from 1985 to 1999 and is the franchise leader in receptions with 941 and receiving yards with 13,095.
The upcoming preseason matchup will hardly be the most memorable game played between the Giants and Bills. The two faced off in Super Bowl XXV in Tampa in what is one of the most tightly contested championship games in league history. The underdog Giants won 20-19 and came away with the 1990 NFL title, prevailing in the final seconds when Bills kicker Scott Norwood missed a potential game-winning field goal.
The regular season history between the clubs is much less storied, with Buffalo leading the all-time series 6-5. In their last meeting, the Giants won 27-24 at the Meadowlands in 2011 en route to a fourth Super Bowl title.
The last time the Giants and Bills played each other in the preseason was in 1991, just a few months after Super Bowl XXV. New York won the preseason game as well, 23-17.
