In a recent interview, Giants' defensive back Antrel Rolle stated that he thought of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie as the best cornerback in the league.
Entering his fifth year with the Giants, Antrel Rolle is coming off another great season; recording 98 total tackles and a career-high 6 interceptions. When asked what he thought about the recent signing of shutdown corner Rodgers-Cromartie, Rolle replied, "I think he's the best corner in the league, hands down. He's a phenomenal talent, one of the most gifted corners I've ever seen and the sky's the limit for DRC."
And a phenomenal talent he is indeed. Drafted by Arizona in 2008, Cromartie led the Cardinals' defense to Super Bowl XLIII in his rookie year. Accustomed to covering some of the best talent in the league, its no surprise Tom Coughlin plans to have Cromartie covering No. 1 receivers in the upcoming season.
Rolle continued on to say that he was excited about the recent additions to the Giants defense. With Rogers-Cromartie, Walter Thurmond, Prince Amukamara, and Rolle himself, there's a lot of talent in the G-men's secondary.
"I think it could be a dynamic group," Rolle said. "We're all working together, we're all grinding together, we're all smiling together. That's a great start."
As the No. 25 ranked defense in the league, it's going to be crucial for the Giants to focus on team chemistry and get everyone on the same page. As Rolle said himself, "If you don't gel, you don't have that chemistry, it could be a disaster."
Antrel Rolle isn't the only one excited about the Giants revamped defense. A Super Bowl champion last year, cornerback Walter Thurmond has joined the Giants on a one-year deal.
"We have the potential to be the best in the league," Thurmond said, "That's going to come down to our preparation now."
Coming off a championship year, Thurmond says that his mentality hasn't changed at all.
"Just the way the league is going it's always a prove-it year. It's a young man's game at the end of the day. You have to prove yourself every time you go out on that field."
One thing's for sure, it's going to be interesting to see whether or not this accomplished group will live up to the hype and perform like a championship caliber defense.
