Barber drops in rankings

Posted Dec 14, 2004

Two low-output games have cost Tiki Barber the NFL lead in yards from scrimmage. Barber had 64 yards in Sunday’s loss in Baltimore, one week after totaling just 38 yards in Washington.

Barber has 1,743 yards (1,238 rushing and 505 receiving), which is 222 more than NFC runner-up Shaun Alexander of Seattle. But Barber has slipped behind NFL leader Edgerrin James of Indianapolis, who has 1,814 yards (1,395 rushing and 419 receiving).

Barber has exactly 300 touches this season (258 rushing attempts and 42 receptions) and is averaging 5.8 yards per touch. He is second in the NFC in rushing yards, second in rushing touchdowns with 10 and first in first downs with 76 (61 rushing, 15 receiving).

Barber must average 50 yards per game over the final three weeks to set a career high in rushing yards (he had 1,387 two years ago) and 93 yards per game to break Joe Morris’ single-season team rushing record of 1,516 yards, set in 1986. He must average 84 yards a game to break Rodney Hampton’s franchise career record of 6,897 yards.

*The Giants lead the NFL with a 25.0 kickoff return average. The last time they finished a season with the league lead in kickoff return yardage was 1953, when they averaged 26.3 yards per return.

*The Giants had 11 first downs in Sunday’s game in Baltimore. It was the first time they had exactly 11 first downs in a game since the last time they played Baltimore, in Super Bowl XXXV.
