Giant players as free agency about to open
However, there's no doubt the Giants will be looking to fill a few obvious holes, most notably at offensive tackle, where the club has targeted Jonas Jennings of Buffalo and the Jets' Kareem McKenzie. A Buffalo source told TGI that it's 90 percent certain that Jennings will not return to Buffalo, but that it's going to take at least a $10 million signing bonus to wrap up the Bills massive left tackle. McKenzie's an option should the Giants, who are unlikely to cough up that much in a bonus, unless it's a totally cap-friendly deal, be unable to ink Jennings. A Jennings signing would allow the club to move Luke Petitgout back to right tackle, which is certainly the master plan. New York's other obvious trouble spot is receiver, where the club is expected to entertain both top free agent Plaxico Burress and Cincinnati's T.J. Houshmandzadeh, a more realistic alternative. The Giants will also be shopping for help at linebacker, specifically an inside guy. Pittsburgh's Kendrell Bell and Baltimore's Ed Hartwell both offer the versatility the Giants would love. A backup quarterback is a must, but it has to be someone, unlike Kurt Warner last season, that won't be a threat to starter Eli Manning. Should Dallas release Vinny Testaverde, as expected, he'd be a perfect fit. There's also a decent chance that New York will re-sign Jesse Palmer to compete for the backup slot. Most of New York's other free agents - like RB Ron Dayne, TE Marcellus Rivers and K Steve Christie will be allowed to walk, but the Giants would be interested in keeping the likes of RB Mike Cloud, FB Jim Finn and DT Lance Legree if the price were right. Cloud's return will be determined by whether or not New York is able to work out a trade with the Browns for RB William Green, as was first reported by TGI.
