Linebackers: Depth and Experience

Posted Jul 8, 2005

If the 2004 season proved anything it’s you can’t have enough depth and experience. The Giants linebackers have both heading into the new season. In fact, the guy with the least amount of pro experience is linebackers coach Bill Sheridan, a first-year NFL coach.

“I think the sheer detail of information that we take off film in analyzing an opponent is definitely a notch up,” says Sheridan about going from college to the pros. “And players have a lot less distractions. These guys are very focused…they know what it takes.”

One of the most focused players Sheridan has is free agent linebacker Antonio Pierce, who notched 112 tackles, a sack and two interceptions for the Redskins last year.

“He’s a very passionate, film study guy. He wants to be a great football player,” Sheridan said. Behind Pierce will be last year’s starter Kevin Lewis (91 tackles, 1 sack).

The outside linebackers will be Carlos Emmons and a combination of Nick Greisen and Barrett Green.
