Giants shelve Williams

The Giants placed safety Shaun Williams, who had missed the previous five games with a pulled hamstring, on injured reserve. To fill Williams' spot on the active roster, the team signed offensive lineman Lewis Kelly off their practice squad.

As for the rest of New York's walking wounded, all four players injured in Sunday's win in Philly - OTs Kareem McKenzie and Luke Petitgout, LB Antonio Pierce and DT William Joseph - missed Tuesday's practice.

Williams, an eight-year veteran, suffered the hamstring injury in the first quarter at San Francisco on Nov. 6. Prior to that, Williams had 16 tackles (15 solo) and two interceptions on the season.

"We had been hoping that Shaun would get back to full strength," said head coach Tom Coughlin. "Shaun has been working hard to get back on the field. Unfortunately, he has an injury that takes time to completely heal."

This is the third season in a row Williams' season has ended prematurely on injured reserve. In 2003, he was forced to the sideline after 10 games, ending his streak of 58 consecutive starts. Last year, he played only two games before suffering a tear to the lateral meniscus in his left knee, the same injury he suffered in his right knee the previous season.

Kelly, 6-4 and 306 pounds, has played in 15 NFL games with five starts, all with the Minnesota Vikings. He was signed by the Giants on Jan. 13. His contract was terminated on Sept. 3 and he was added to the practice squad the following day. Kelly joined the NFL as a seventh-round draft choice by the Vikings in 2000. He spent that season on injured reserve, then played three games in 2001, seven (with five starts) in 2002 and five in 2003. Kelly spent the 2004 season out of football after being waived by the Vikings on Aug. 10.

"Given the uncertainty of the health of some of our offensive line," said Coughlin, "we felt like we needed to bring Lewis up from the practice squad."

To take Kelly's place on the practice squad, the Giants signed offensive lineman Jon Doty, a 6-7, 307-pounder who was in the Carolina Panthers' training camp this summer. He was waived on Sept. 3. Doty started 26 games his junior and senior seasons at Kansas State.
