The Giants today announced that they have signed
punter Matt Allen, who was released last week by the Atlanta Falcons. To
make room for Allen on the roster, the Giants released Rodney Williams,
their punter in 2001.
Allen, a 6-4, 249-pound product of Troy State, impressed coach Jim
Fassel during a Giants Stadium tryout on Tuesday. He will make his Giants
debut in Thursday's preseason finale against the Baltimore Ravens.
"I wanted to make some improvement," Fassel said. "I'm not going to
go into the season unless I feel like I've tried to improve in every area.
>From what I saw in the tryout and what I've seen on tape, Allen looks like
he has good hang time and good placement with the ball. I'm anxious to see
him, and I didn't want to wait and have a new punter in the first regular
season game."
Fassel said he is looking for more consistency in the punting game.
