Reese Wraps up First Draft

Jerry Reese concluded his first draft at the helm of the Giants with two picks in the seventh round. With their original seventh round pick (224th overall), New York selected Arizona safety Michael Johnson. Then, with the 250th pick, a compensatory pick awarded for lost free agents, New York tabbed Marshall RB Ahmad Bradshaw.

Johnson, who ran a 4.66 40-yard dash, unfortunately doesn’t have the speed of his namesake, the famous world-record sprinter. While he played strong safety for the Wildcats, it’s expected that Johnson will line up as a free safety in New York. In 21 games (14 starts), Johnson collected 107 tackles with 5.5 tackles for loss. He was named second-team All-Pac 10 in 2006.

According to Ourlads, Johnson is a fluid athlete that is durable and tough; he possesses good range and zone coverage skills. His weaknesses are tackling ability and consistency in coverage.

Bradshaw, 5-9, 198, was the nation’s sixth-leading rusher last season (with 1,523 yards) and finished his career with 2,987 yards. He added 696 yards on 86 receptions.

However, he comes to New York with him some off-field concerns. Bradshaw originally signed to play at the University of Virginia but never enrolled for the fall semester after he was arrested for underage alcohol possession and obstruction of justice. After walking on at Marshall, Bradshaw was arrested for burglary and petty larceny before the 2006 season.
