The Recipe to Lure Strahan Back
By
Ken Palmer
Giants Insider
Posted Jul 31, 2007
The way to Michael Strahan’s heart is easy. It just comes down to whether or not the Giants are willing to swallow their pride and beg the All-Pro to return for at least one more season.
A source close to Strahan said all the Giants have to do is show their Hall-of-Fame DE some love, and he’d be back in Albany in short order. With multiple television offers for at least $2 million a season on the table and plenty of loot in the bank, there’s no question that Strahan, who is due to make $4 million this season, does not need the cash. It’s becoming clearer and clearer that Strahan’s holdout has nothing to do with him seeking more money.
Strahan is also bothered by the fact that the Giants are fining him on a daily basis while he decides on his future. Other established veterans such as
Willie Roaf
and
Tarik Glenn
were not fined while they decided on their future.
Both coach Tom Coughlin and GM Jerry Reese confirmed that they spoke to Strahan Monday night, and both stated that they wouldn’t try to convince Strahan to return. Therein lies their mistake. If the club really wants Strahan back, all they need to do is let him know. You would think they would know by now how to deal with the emotional Strahan.
“I told him I would not talk him into coming back,” Coughlin said.
Why not?
“I told him, ‘Michael, we’ll move forward as is you’re not going to be here,’ ” Reese said. “We can’t sit on our hands.”
But you can extend them, if nothing else to appease your best defensive player, without whom the Giants will be totally lost this season.
