Bad Break for Tyree

Giants special team ace David Tyree will be sidelined for at least the next month with a fractured wrist. Tyree underwent surgery on Monday to repair a broken bone in his left wrist. Tyree, a Pro Bowl special teams player in 2005, likely will be sidelined four to six weeks.

Tyree was injured in Saturday night’s 20-12 loss to the Jets. The fifth-year pro caught one pass for eight yards and had a 56-yard reception nullified by a penalty. Tyree also downed a Cory Ohnesorge punt at the one-yard line.

“It wasn’t until the next morning that he came in with a swollen wrist and they did the X-ray and they found out that he had the (fracture),” Tom Coughlin said.

Starting split end Plaxico Burress spent Monday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan to have his back examined. Burress did not play in any of the Giants’ first three preseason games, missing the first two with a sprained ankle and Saturday’s loss to the Jets with the flu. Burress began to have back pain after returning to the practice field last week. He had been sidelined more than two weeks because of the sprained ankle.

“What provoked it, I don’t know,” Coughlin said.

“His back is the issue right now. All I know is he practiced a couple of days and then he had some issues the next day and could not practice. Over the weekend it got somewhat better but not completely so; that is why he is seeing a doctor.” The bad injury news didn’t end there.

Robert Douglas, the only fullback on the roster, will have arthroscopic surgery to repair the meniscus cartilage in his knee. Coughlin did not know what the time frame will be for his recovery and return. “They can tell us more after they do the scope,” Coughlin said.

Without Douglas, running back Reuben Droughns played fullback in practice.

“We are going to work Reuben, who has done that before … in Denver,” Coughlin said. “And, of course, (rookie tight end Michael) Matthews. I would like to see Reuben this week at fullback.”
