Fassel has been preparing Dusty Zeigler to be ready to play at either right guard in place of Jason Whittle or at center. Whittle was sent home Wednesday after seeing a chiropractor for his back spasms.
Fassel said that he wants Zeigler to be able to play either spot, but that's he's uncertain if he'd be able to hold up for an entire contest.
Fassel also said that he wants to leave Chris Bober at center because Bober has played well, Zeigler is rusty and also because Bober and QB Kerry Collins have not botched even one snap this season. That was a big problem for Big Blue last year.
Our best guess is Zeigler starts at RG in place of Whittle and Bober stays put.
If either is unable to play, the question is whether Jason Sehorn or Ralph Brown would be the other starter. Until now, Fassel has been hesitant to have Sehorn play anywhere but as the nickel corner for two reasons - it limits his plays and should help his knee recover faster and it's usually easier to cover slot receivers because more often than not, they run basically straight patterns.
And Fassel also has to prepare an offense that is unlikely to have TE Jeremy Shockey at its disposal.
"The bye week is coming at a good time," Fassel said.
