Replacing Ike Hilliard, who is out for the season, won't be easy, but at
least for now, the Giants are planning to promote from within. The Giants
aren't expected to sign any free agent receivers, even though Willie Jackson
is available and a hot commodity.
Ron Dixon will move into the starting lineup and rookie Tim Carter will
become the third receiver. But don't be surprised if those two switch roles
in the next couple weeks.
To help bolster the receiving corps, Sean Bennett, who was inactive Monday in
Philadelphia, was moved to WR. Bennett, who has been a non-factor as a RB,
will begin practicing with the receivers and might play as a wideout in the
next week or so...
G Jason Whittle is hopeful of returning to action. If so, he'll slide back
into his starting right guard role and Dusty Zeigler, who has filled in the
last two weeks, will return to the bench.
"Whittle's much better," Head Coach Jim Fassel said. "He has a chance to
play."
Rookie LB Nick Greisen is still a ways away from returning. He said he
wouldn't even guess when he'd be able to get back on the field.
"You have a broken bone in your foot, there's not a lot you can do about it,"
he said
Fassel said he has no plans to ask rookie TE Jeremy Shockey to tone down his
act.
"I don't want to change his personality," Fassel said. "He is who he is and
that's what makes him a great player."
