Before you go and get all excited, remember that last offseason Jerry Reese only signed one free agent and his club went on to win it all. | |||
|
However, it has to be slightly alarming that Reese’s Giants have already lost three defensive players – including two key starters – off last season’s Super Bowl champion defense. For the record, Big Blue’s free agent scoreboard through the first 24 hours currently reads NFL 3, Giants 0. Kawika Mitchell started things off when he inked a surprisingly lucrative five-year, $17.5 million deal with Buffalo that included a $3.5 million signing bonus. While the Giants would have liked to retain Mitchell, they can’t be faulted for letting him take the money and run. The same goes for Gibril Wilson, who was all but officially a goner before free agency even opened. Wilson received a shocking six-year, $39 million deal from the Raiders. Not to take anything away from Wilson, who played very steadily this season, but it’s borderline unbelievable that the Raiders paid him what they did. The third defender to jump ship for bluer waters was LB Reggie Torbor, who signed on with the Bill Parcells-led Dolphins. |
