EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – For those of you who care – and we certainly wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t – the Giants held off the Patriots, 19-14, on Thursday night to cap a 2-2 preseason.

“It’s a good way to finish up the preseason for us,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. “I’m encouraged by tonight.”

Here are some highlights:

David Carr, who found out only moments before kickoff that he was gong to start, looked pretty good for much of the game. He played into the fourth quarter, was taken out for a brief period and then re-inserted when rookie Andre’ Woodson didn’t exactly impress anyone. Carr finished the game by completing 20-of-29 passes for 192 yards, 2 TDs and no INTs. Carr, who threw a lot of short passes early when he was often under heavy pressure, improved by leaps and bounds as the game wore on.

“I thought he played well, I thought he managed the game well,” Coughlin said, adding that Carr’s ability to make plays on third down was impressive.

“It was really fun to get in and get some reps (with the first-team),” Carr said.

After the game he said he wasn’t the least bit concerned about whether or not he’d done enough to clinch the backup QB job.

“I’ve put that stuff so far out of my mind it’s unbelievable,” he said. “I can’t control those things.”…

Darcy Johnson barreled over a few defenders en route to 26-yard TD catch-and-run…

Brandon Jacobs proved that he’s ready for the real stuff. He gained a total of 30 yards on two consecutive carries on New York’s first drive…

Sinorice Moss caught a nine-yard TD pass from Carr on a nice crossing pattern…

Josh Huston clanged an extra point attempt off the left upright. Huston later hit a 20-yard field goal in the third quarter and a 30-yarder in the fourth…

Michael Johnson, who continues to try to hold off rookie Kenny Phillips for the starting free safety spot, looked to have a nice interception late in the second quarter but it was overturned by video replay…

R.W. McQuarters ended the first half with an end-zone interception…

On the injury front, WR Domenik Hixon left the game in the first half with back spasms…

OT Guy Whimper left the game with what the club called “turf toe,” but he had a pretty large boot on his left ankle after the game…

DT Dave Tollefson suffered a stinger on punt team…

Rookie C Digger Bujnoch had to be carted from the field in the game’s final minutes.
