TGI continues its two-part series examining New York’s position-by-position needs heading into the 2009 Draft. Today we take a look at the three defensive positions.
DL
Position Strength: 8
Giants Need: 2
We dare you to show us a deeper and more talented defensive line in the entire league. With the two solid signings of
Chris Canty
and
Rocky Bernard
and the return of Pro Bowler Osi Umenyiora, the Giants can put DL on the back burner this draft – although taking a late-round chance on an athlete sounds about right.
LB
Position Strength: 9
Giants Need: 8
Even though the depth chart is loaded, the Giants are facing a lot of questions at LB. Most notable is what the future holds for
Antonio Pierce
, as some in the know seem to think this might be his last season. As a result, going for an athletic inside LB early on would not be a shock. We’ve heard that
James Laurinaitis
of
Ohio State
is a strong possibility if New York sits tight at number 29. Big Blue also hosted highly-regarded Virgini a LB
Clint Sintim
for a visit.
DB
Position Strength: 8
Giants Need: 6
If everyone stays healthy and plays up to their ability, the Giants are looking at boasting one of their better secondary units in decades. But we all know you can never have too many corners, and it would be very surprising if the Giants go through a 10-selection draft and don’t tab at least one DB. Second-day possibilities include a pair of athletic corners –
Vince Anderson
of Weber International and
Florida State
’s Michael Garvin.
