Bomar Exudes Confidence and Cannon Arm

The question was posed to rookie quarterback Rhett Bomar about whether his off-the-field problems at Oklahoma, which got him kicked off the team and led to him transferring to Sam Houston State, did anything to alleviate his supposed cocky nature.
“I don’t know where the idea that I am cocky comes from,” he said. “I don’t think I’m cocky, I’m just confident . . . . As a quarterback you need to be confident.”
Even though it’s only minicamp, Bomar’s confidence is apparent in every throw he made. Whether it was dumping it off to running backs
Andre Brown
or Andre Hall, strong-arming it between the linebackers and secondary to tight end
Travis Beckum
, or lofting perfect spirals to receivers
Hakeem Nicks
and
Ramses Barden
, the young gunslinger showed zero trepidation in finding his open man.
Yet, despite the impressive throws, the first question asked of coach Tom Coughlin afterward was about Bomar’s “funky delivery.”
“Yeah, it’s quick,” Coughlin noted. “It is an all-arm kind of thing.”
Since Bomar isn’t slated to take
Eli Manning
’s starting job any time soon or perhaps any time at all, there’s plenty of time to straighten out his mechanics with one of the best QB coaches in the league – Chris Palmer.
The point is confidence and a cannon arm are two phenomenal assets to find in a fifth-round rookie QB.
Bomar has already paid the price for his problems at
Oklahoma
. His dismissal from the Sooners probably cost him a chance to play in the National Championship Game this past year, and may have even cost him the Heisman . . . since his predecessor
Sam Bradford
won it while Bomar was slinging it for the Division IAA Bearkats.
“I know things would have been different if I’d have been there,” Bomar said. “But it worked out . . . you’d probably drive yourself crazy if you think about the what-ifs.”
Bomar quickly made up for lost time. In two years at Sam Houston State he became the Bearkats all-time leading passer with 5,562 yards. That included 6,157 yards in total offense, 37 TD passes, and 12 rushing scores.
Yup, the kid has all kinds of mobility, plus he’s well-schooled – a coach’s son. His father Jerry was his high school coach at Grand Prairie (Texas) High School.
The Giants loved Bomar’s football pedigree and wasted no time snagging him in the fifth round.
Hey, the kid with the cannon arm deserves a shot.
