On Guard – Petrus is the Pick
Mitch Petrus

The Giants drafted who they believe will ultimately be the successor to the LG throne when they chose Arkansas’s Mitch Petrus in the fifth round. Kevin Boothe is expected to battle Rich Seubert for the starting left guard spot this summer. Before too long the Giants are hoping that Petrus can fill that role.

The 6-3, 310-pound Petrus was a two-year starter for the Razorbacks after walking on to the club. He started his final 25 games as an offensive guard – 12 at left guard in 2007 and 13 at right guard last season. He was forced to redshirt and didn’t play in 2008 after being ruled academically ineligible. Petrus, who also played some fullback and tight end with Arkansas, recorded 167 knockdowns/key blocks and was credited with 21 touchdown-resulting blocks.

Petrus’s strength is not in question as he benched 225 pounds an amazing 45 times. He’s also known to have a quick initial move and good body control. He also improved his use of hands last season.

After four consecutive defensive picks the Giants have finally tabbed an offensive player, albeit a lineman that’s not exactly a lock to get the fans all fired up. That is, of course, until he entrenches himself opposite Chris Snee as a starting guard for the New York Football Giants.
