Biography:
Eddie Johnson was a sixth-round draft choice (180th overall) in 2003, the highest selection the team has used on a kicking specialist. While he became the Vikings’ starting punter, he struggled to get the ball away in some games. The Vikings will make him earn his roster spot this season against stiff competition in training camp.

2003: Averaged 39.1 gross and 32.6 net, with 12 punts inside the 20-yard line. He showed potential, with a 47.7 average on Sept. 21 (third-best rookie performance in team history), but struggled with consistency and was eventually replaced in the starting lineup for the final two games after bobbling snaps in three consecutive games.

College: Two-year standout at Idaho State, who led the nation in net punting for two years. Punted 100 times for 4,627 yards, setting a school record with a 46.27-yard average. Twenty-five of his attempts were downed inside the 20-yard line and 19 more resulted in touchbacks. All-America second-team selection by The NFL Draft Report and All-Big Sky Conference first-team choice in 2002. Associated Press, Walter Camp first-team All-America choice, first-team All-Big Sky pick in 2001. Led the nation in 2001 with a 46.33-yard average, gaining 2,270 yards on 49 attempts. Two-year standout at Orange Coast (Calif.) Junior College. Sports medicine major.

Personal: Three-year letter-winner at Newport (Calif.) Harbor High, averaging 42.3 yards per kick as a senior, earning all-state, all-county, and All-Sea View honors as a senior.
