Became the starter out of training camp in a battle with Doug Flutie. Has not looked back since joining fellow 2001 draft pick LaDainian Tomlinson as staples of the offense.
2001 - San Diego:
Brees played in his first NFL game on Nov. 4th (week 8) against Kansas City. He replaced an injured Doug Flutie and went on to complete 15 of 27 passes for 221 yards with one touchdown. He rallied his team back from a 19-0 deficit and they ended up taking a lead on his first career touchdown pass. The pass went to Freddie Jones for 20 yards. He did not play the rest of the year.
College Career
He was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2000 and left Purdue as Big Ten and school’s all-time leader in passing yards (11,792), touchdown passes (90), total offensive yards (12,693), completion percentage (.611), completions (1,026) and attempts (1,678). He also ranked fourth in NCAA record books for total offense, completions and attempts.He led the Boilermakers to 2000 Rose Bowl, the school’s first appearance in Pasadena for a New Year’s Day game since 1967. He won eight Big Ten Player of the Week awards in his career at Purdue tying a conference mark set by Ron Dayne at Wisconsin. Won the Big Ten’s Most Valuable Player as a senior and was named Big Ten Conference Player of Year in 1998 and 2000.
