The top name in the Supplemental Draft is Baylor WR Josh Gordon. Eric Galko of Optimum Scouting…
WR Draft Options Available
The NFL supplemental draft is scheduled for Thursday, and former Utah and Baylor wide receiver Josh Gordon is generating significant buzz entering his workout at the Houston Texans' indoor practice facility Tuesday.
Gordon, a 6-4, 220-pound receiver, never played for the Utes. He sat out last season as a transfer from Baylor. As a sophomore in 2010, he caught 42 passes for 714 yards and seven touchdowns.
Gordon is one of eight players confirmed eligible for Thursday's draft. Teams making selections submit bids to the league office and sacrifice the corresponding pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.
Scouts are sure to be interested in hearing from Baylor coach Art Briles and Utah coach Kyle Willingham. Briles suspended Gordon after a marijuana arrest and was suspended indefinitely prior to the 2011 season, leading him to transfer to Utah. Willingham said the Utes did plenty of homework and felt Gordon deserved a second chance.
His on-field ability is NFL-caliber. NFLDraftScout.com calls Gordon "rough around the edges as a receiver. He is a long-striding runner with the build-up speed and fluidity to make plays after the catch. Gordon is raw as a route runner and has only one true season of playing experience in college."
Gordon has the skill set to warrant consideration in the first four rounds.
TCU running back Ed Wesley and Boise State cornerback Quaylon Ewing might be late-round options. Wesley rushed for 1,078 yards in 2010 and had 21 career touchdowns. At 5-9, 200 pounds, the big question for Wesley is durability. A shoulder injury kept him out of three games last season.
Former Georgia defensive end Montez Robinson was once a coveted recruit, but off-field issues eventually landed him in jail. He was dismissed from Georgia in April 2010 after his second arrest in a three-month span. Robinson, 6-5, 245, was heavily recruited by multiple SEC schools.
The other players eligible: former Syracuse FB Adam Harris; Iowa State OG Adrian Haughton; Carson-Newman LB Larry Lumpkin; McMurray College WR Houston Tuminell.
