Giants' D-Coordinator: Antrel is our glue guy

The New York Giants are hoping injured safety Antrel Rolle will be ready in time for the start of the regular season. Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell shared his reaction to the injury with reporters on Tuesday.

With star safety Antrel Rolle out indefinitely with a sprained right ankle, New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell expressed a bit of uneasiness over his unit's latest setback.

"I'm concerned," admitted Fewell. "Well we don't really know the extent of it, so I'm always concerned when a player is down. "

Rolle's back-up, Ryan Mundy is the most likely candidate to assume the starting safety spot and Fewell showed the utmost confidence in the former Pittsburgh Steeler to step in and fill the void.

"A sound football player," said Fewell of Mundy. "Smart football player. I'm happy that he's with us. Very conscientious and physical."

The Giants have yet to announce a timeframe for when Rolle is expected back at practice, and with uncertainty surrounding his return, the team's defensive coordinator is trying to adjust on the fly.

"It is a difficult process for us," admitted Fewell. "It is a touch and go situation with the ankle. Because it is preseason and we're in training camp mode, we'll do the best possible thing that we can to take care of him and to make sure he's healthy."

The quarterback of Big Blue's secondary, Rolle is a versatile player with exceptional range in pass coverage and equally impressive tackling ability at the line of scrimmage. Fewell didn't hide the fact that the team will be missing his playmaking ability.

"He's one of the building blocks," said Fewell of Rolle. "He's a brick he's always there. His presence is always valuable for us."

Rolle told reporters on Tuesday that he has every intention of being ready for the Giants regular season opener against the Dallas Cowboys. When asked about the possibility of his top safety missing regular season action, Fewell demonstrated a degree uncertainty.

"I hope not," Fewell. "That's a tough question for me to answer right now. Again Antrel is our glue. He's the guy that binds us together." Recommended Stories
